Sleep is one of the basic human requirements. It plays a significant role in maintaining a person’s well-being and good health throughout his life. Sleep deprivation can cause various physical, emotional and mental problems. Some of these are heart diseases, stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes, slow healing process, fatigue, clumsiness, daytime sleepiness, weight gain or weight loss, reduced decision-making ability, stress, headaches, short temper, hand tremor, hallucinations, memory lapse, memory loss, confusion, etc.
It is a fact that one can survive longer without food than without sleep. So, how long can you go without sleep? This article provides you with comprehensive information on this matter.

How Long Can You Stay Awake?

Research On Prolonged Sleep Deprivation:

Here are some studies where human beings and rats were tested for their tolerance to stay awake for prolonged times.
However, none of these studies effectively provide information as to how long can a human go without sleep? This is because no one in these studies died definitively from lack of sleep alone. There were other factors too involved. It is ethically tricky to inspect those boundaries under lab conditions.
Another renowned experiment on testing the ability to stay awake was that made on rats at the University of Chicago in the 1980s. Researchers monitored them keenly and jolted these rodents to keep them awake every time they started to fall asleep.
It was found that these animals died within a period of two weeks. But even this experiment has its shortcomings. For, one does not know whether the rats died of utter sleep deprivation alone. Their deaths may also have links to increased blood pressure and stress hormone (Cortisol) levels as these animals were woken up from their sleep constantly.
Apart from these programmed studies, some reports have also been made of natural sleep deprivation situations. One of these is that of the Air Force Pilots who go without sleep for three or four days.
It has been seen that they go delirious that they crash their planes by falling asleep. Even those who remain awake for single nights have reported having impaired driving abilities just as if they were drunk.

Human Medical Disorders That Cause Sleep Deprivation

There are some rare medical sleep deprivation disorders in human beings. These again arises different, surprising answers to the question how long can you go without sleep? These disorders are discussed below:

Morvan’s Syndrome Or Morvan’s Fibrillary Chorea

Morvan’s syndrome or Morvan’s fibrillary chorea is a rare kind of autoimmune disease where weakness, severe sleep loss (agrypnia), cramping, excessive sweating, irregular multiple contractions of the long muscles, pain, weight loss, twitching, periodic hallucinations, delirium, hyperhidrosis, and pruritus are experienced for months or even years together. In the year 1974, in France, neurobiologist Michel Jouvet and co, studied a 27-year-old man with Morvan’s syndrome.

They have recorded that he did not sleep for months together. Neither he feels tired or sleepy, nor did he exhibit memory, anxiety or mood disorders. However, between 9 to 11 pm, almost every night, he experienced visual, auditory, somesthetic (touch sense), and olfactory hallucinations over a period of 20 to 60 minutes. He also experienced pain and vasoconstriction in his toes and fingers during this time. Recent studies say that the Morvan’s syndrome is linked to serum antibodies that are directed against certain potassium channels in the membranes of cells and nerves.

8 Amazing Facts About Sleep

Here are some lesser known facts about sleep that will help you gain better insights on how long can you go without sleep.
1Most of the information on sleep has been learned in the recent past (just 25 years back!).
2Sleep deprivation in 18 to 24-year-olds made them experience impaired performance which is lesser than that of older adults.
3Experts state that 24 hours internet accessibility is one of the most attractive sleep distractions out there.
4 The longest recorded consecutive sleep deprivation is 18 days, 21 hours, and 40 minutes. It was accomplished on a rocking chair marathon. The individual reported experiencing paranoia, hallucinations, slurred speech, impaired memory, concentration lapses, and blurred vision during this period.
5 Without keen medical supervision, it is impossible to know if an individual is awake. Individuals can nap even with opened eyes and even unconsciously.
6 At night, if an individual takes less than five minutes to fall asleep, he is sleep deprived. The ideal period for falling asleep is between 10 to 15 minutes. This means that you are not very exhausted and tired enough to fall into a deep sleep when you start sleeping.

Rounding it all up, sleep science is a recently developed disciple. So, there is no availability of point info on exactly how long a human can go without sleep. However, it is well established that sleep is a very important process that has a significant on the overall well-being and good health of an individual. 5 Proven Yoga Poses For Low Back Pain Relief

Yoga poses on Treating lower back pain

People who took yoga or stretching classes are twice as likely to cut back on pain medications for their back aches as people who managed symptoms on their own, according to a study published in the journal Archives of Internal Medicine.
  • It's always a good idea to ask your doctor before starting a new fitness regimen, especially if you're prone to pain. Once you get the green light, try these seven soothing poses for back pain. You can do these poses in any order. Gradually increase the intensity by holding them for longer amounts of time.
Achy back? Give yoga a go. Multiple studies have shown the power of the ancient practice, which emphasizes stretching, strength, and flexibility, to relieve back soreness. In fact, several studies have found that yoga can even trump usual care for back pain when it comes to improving back function.
Help your low back pain with these 5 proven yoga for fast pain relief.

    1. Cat and Cow Pose

The perfect poses for an achy, sore back, cow and cat stretches loosen back muscles, whether as part of a yoga routine or as a warm-up for another workout.
Try it: Starting in an all-fours position, move into cat pose by slowly pressing your spine up, arching your back. Hold for a few seconds and then move to cow by scooping your spine in, pressing your shoulder blades back and lifting your head. Moving back and forth from cat to cow helps move your spine onto a neutral position, relaxing the muscles and easing tension.
Repeat 10 times, flowing smoothly from cat into cow, and cow back into cat. Repeat the sequence as needed.

    2. Downward-Facing Dog

This classic yoga pose is a great total body stretch that targets back extensors, or the large muscles that help form your lower back, support your spine, and help you stand and lift objects.
Try it: Start on your hands and knees, with your hands slightly in front of your shoulders. Pressing back, raise your knees away from the floor and lift your tailbone up toward the ceiling. For an added hamstring stretch, gently push your heels toward the floor. Hold the position for 5 to 10 breaths, and repeat the pose five to seven times.

    3. Child's Pose

It may look like you’re resting, but child’s pose is an active stretch that helps elongate the back. It’s also a great de-stressor before bed at the end of a long, exhausting day.
Try it: Start on all fours with your arms stretched out straight in front of you, then sit back so your glutes (butt muscles) come to rest just above — but not touching — your heels. Hold the position for 5 to 10 breaths, and repeat as many times as needed for a good, soothing stretch.

    4. Pigeon Pose

Pigeon pose, which can be a little challenging for yoga newbies, stretches hip rotators and flexors. It might not seem like the most obvious position to treat a back ache, but tight hips can contribute to lower back pain.
Try it: Start in downward-facing dog with your feet together. Then draw your left knee forward and turn it out to the left so your left leg is bent and near-perpendicular to your right one; lower both legs to the ground. You can simply keep your back right leg extended straight behind you, or for an added hamstring stretch — seasoned pigeon posers, only! — carefully pull your back foot off the ground and in toward your back. Hold the position for 5 to 10 breaths, then switch to the other side, and repeat as needed.

    5. Triangle Pose

Triangle pose is great for strengthening the back and legs and can help lengthen your muscles along the sides of your torso while stretching the muscle fibers along your outer hip (your IT, or iliotibial, band).
Try it: Start standing straight with your feet together. Next, lunge your left foot back three to four feet, and point your left foot out at a 45-degree angle. Turn your chest to the side and open up the pose by stretching your right arm toward the ground and the left arm toward the ceiling, keeping both your right and left legs straight. You may not be able to touch the ground with your right arm at first, so don’t over-stretch — only bend as far as you can while maintaining a straight back. Hold the position for 5 to 10 breaths, then switch to the other side, and repeat as needed.
Back pain can stop you from doing your regular job. Such health issue can damage muscle and nerves. Hence it is always good idea to get rid of low back pain fast. Try these amazing yoga positions to cure lower back pain.

Top 5 Natural Remedies for Colon Cleansing

Nobody can understand better than me as to what can happen if one doesn’t cleanse colon properly! Since few days, I had not been able to understand why I was not feeling my usual self. I was low on energy, had headache off and on, witnessed quite a few types of skin allergies, and was uncomfortable due to bloating and vomiting. Despite visiting the physician and having a whole lot of medicines to cure these unexplained symptoms, I was not able to get comfort. I was good (well, sort of) when I had the medicines given by my doctor but as soon as I stopped them, the same old things happened to me. I was completely at loss! It could be my colon which was not getting cleaned properly!

Understanding Colon and Why it Needs Extra Cleansing!

Colon is one of our body’s very friendly organ- a part of our digestive system which eliminates the wastes and toxins from our body. It also absorbs water and requisite sodium (salt) in order to maintain body’s electrolyte balance. Although, regular bowel movement do flush away all the waste from our bodies, still colon needs to take a major part in eliminating body wastes which it does. However, sometimes it doesn’t function properly as a result of which certain wastes and toxins cling to the walls of our colons. This leads to various health problems including common cold, constipation, diarrhea, fatigue, headaches, allergies, indigestion, joint pains, vision problems, loss of memory as well as stress. If we are not attentive to this problem of colon not cleaning properly, it can even lead to serious diseases including liver and kidney ailments.
